as we return to Holland in December, winter has started with mist turning into snow. The trees in town look like a fairy-tale.
Even the roof garden looks terrific.
Amitsa thinks it is a bit nippy, and spends her time on top of the central heating. Thus she keeps her paws warm, while still being
able to bleat at the birds.
New Years eve, and the air colors red from the fireworks. It spooked Amitsa for a few moments, but soon she settled in between us in
front of the window, following the rockets with her head. Ahhhh, ohhhhh, miauwwwwww.....
The ground floor is temporarily in use by our physiotherapist neighbor, while his house gets a new foundation. He was supposed to have
left before we returned, but obstructions from the in-between neighbors caused a very late start.
Kind of funny, these activities downstairs, but we cannot proceed with the renovations. They leave 7 weeks late, on February 9.
To keep busy, we decide to have a go at the kitchen upstairs. The old kitchen is 20 years old, straight from the building materials
supplier, cheap and simple.
It was OK, but lacking in storage space and the slab so low that washing the dishes was hurting our backs.
We visit several kitchen stores, and make some designs with the Ikea 3-D CAD software.
Ikea is the winner, although we nearly walked out because of unmotivated and incompetent staff, but in the last minute we luckily find
the only salesman who knew his job, and we ordered the lot: 70 boxes: it's Ikea paradise!
Mario helps with the plumbing and the new slab, that was measured slightly too big: 4 centimeters!.
Some creative sawing and glueing later, the new draining board fits.
It starts to resemble a kitchen!
Cooking the first meal: Sonja is stirring in the pans, while Amitsa checks if the kitchen sink is suitable for playing.
And what do we cook with: yes: Israeli potatoes, straight from the local Dutch supermarket.
Finished! Light yellow doors, an extra high slab (98 centimeters high) dark blue floor, very high cupboards, a carousel for pans,
soft closing doors and drawers: it all works like a charm!
Washing the dishes with a straight back, and without banging your head against the cupboards. The kitchen feels like a cockpit:
everything under control.
Oriental cooking has taught us the use of a big oven, and now we have three: a build-in oven big enough to hold the Moroccan tahine,
a toaster oven and our old combi-microwave.
Right, back to Eilat.
