In winter time, Shauli arranges jeep tours for his customers. All his life he has been dashing through the Negev desert,
and he knows every nook and cranny. A good start for us to learn more about the limits of what the Land Rover can do.
The first trip starts at Tsuki Uvda, and after 5 hours of driving over dirt roads and through sand dunes we reach Wadi
Paran, close to Mitzpe Ramon. |
The first stop: tea is made on a little gas burner, and there are plenty of snacks and cakes. The whole Elimelach family is sitting on
the edge of a very steep ravine. |
Difficult piece of road: we climbed up just before Shauli, and got grounded in a deep pit. But the Land Rover managed to climbed out
without external help. Shauli now follows us, and gets through first time right: clearly a matter of experience! |
Mountain pass at Har Nezifim, one of the highest places in the area. The verges of the road drop down steeply on both sides, and the
view is breath taking. |
It feels like being just below the clouds, overlooking all of Israel. |
Just as we settle down for a picknick, two patrol jeeps of the army stop to check us out. Afterall, this is a military practice area.
We have plenty of food, and Henk asks Shauli to invite the soldiers. Seconds later the whole platoon is sitting around us, guns in their
laps, and digging in.

For several months there have been no technical problems in the apartment, but the hot water is turning ever more brown. Sonja discovers
a leak just below the boiler. No wonder really, as the pipes are a jumble of copper and steel and rusty joints. Moty the plumber arrives,
and at his first touch the hot water pipe bursts and 150 liters of hot water plunge into the utility room. After the steam clears away,
he starts to replace all the rusty bits and pieces, adds a new valve and a couple of meters of nylon tube. The next day, the leaking
was still there, and Moty returned to make things dirty again. And, as you may guess, the third day it still leaked, and Moty returned
yet again. After 3 visits the leaking had stopped. But the hot water is still brown :-(

Just after Christmas: it is Hanukka and schools are out. We make a desert trip with Evelyn, Nathan and Rivka. Evelyn
takes the wheel, and enjoys it mightily. |
Sonja's new gym class: belly dance.
(WHAAAAAT: belly dance? Yes, honestly, belly dance).
She is dancing here opposite of her teacher Hadas. Tova swings at the right hand site. |
The lessons are in the Pilates studio of Rina, who joins in the fun herself (to the left in the picture). |
The return trip to Holland is nearing, and it snows and freezes overthere. Amitsa will join us again: this sabra cat will get
quite some temperature shock! De ladies decide to make a warm cover for the cage. Amitsa holds the thread, so that Sonja can prick
her finger more easily. |
New Years Eve in Eilat. The traditional Dutch oil balls are called zoefkaniot and filled with strawberry jam. Champagne is from
the Golan heights, and fire works are lit only by the big hotels. They really make a show of it, with big and professional fire works.
The distance is a bit to far to catch the beauty with our old camera, but we enjoyed it very much from the balcony of our apartment. |
